  • New Relic Launches Industry’s Largest Open Source Ecosystem of Quickstarts and Partner Integrations to Help Every Engineer Embrace Observability in Minutes

Company doubles down on open source commitment with New Relic Instant Observability, an open catalog of 400+ quickstarts to help engineers instrument, dashboard and alert their entire stack

Leading enterprise technologies such as Cribl, Fastly, Gigamon, Kentik, Lacework and Trend Micro contribute to accelerate adoption of observability by all engineers

San Francisco, CA – October 13, 2021 – New Relic (NYSE: NEWR), the observability company, today launched New Relic Instant Observability (I/O), an open source ecosystem of quickstarts to empower all software engineers to instrument, dashboard and alert their entire technology stack in minutes. As part of New Relic’s commitment to make observability an open, data-driven and daily practice for every engineer, New Relic I/O offers end-to-end integrations with 400+ cloud services, open source tools and enterprise technologies, contributed and maintained by the community. The launch features contributions from partners such as Cribl, Fastly, Gigamon, Kentik, Lacework and Trend Micro to bring the power of the world’s leading technologies to engineers everywhere, no matter the technology or use case. New Relic I/O is available as part of New Relic’s generous free pricing tier, so every engineer can get started without talking to sales or providing a credit card.

According to New Relic’s 2021 Observability Forecast, while most engineers and developers are familiar with observability, there’s a huge gap in adopting the practice: only 26% of respondents have a mature observability practice, and the most commonly cited barriers to observability success are lack of resources (38%) and skill gaps (29%). New Relic I/O addresses this gap by introducing an ever-expanding, open ecosystem of knowledge-focused resources that codifies the collective experience of the world’s observability experts and practitioners to help engineers around the world unlock the power of their data faster.

Continuing New Relic’s Commitment to “Open” Observability

Today’s news reinforces New Relic’s commitment to making observability a daily best practice for every engineer by continuing their investment into the global open source community. In the last 12 months, New Relic open sourced 10+ years of agents R&D, standardized on OpenTelemetry, and contributed Pixie to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). New Relic I/O is the continuation of this strategy to dramatically reduce the barrier for engineers to embrace observability to plan, build, deploy and run the great software that underpins flawless digital experiences for their customers, employees, partners and suppliers.

“As part of our developer-first strategy and commitment to open source and open communities, we’re proud to introduce a new open ecosystem to help all software engineers embrace observability as a data-driven approach and daily practice through a vibrant community of telemetry data sources, dashboards and alert configuration quickstarts,” said New Relic CEO Bill Staples. “We’re honored to launch with an ever-expanding group of industry-leading partners who will help us honor our commitment to make observability available for all so every engineer can instantly observe any hardware or software systems, cloud service, SaaS, IoT device or application in seconds.”

“Over the coming years we anticipate thousands of telemetry sources, pre-built dashboards and quickstarts will be curated from the engineering community and consumed by millions of engineers who need telemetry data to make better decisions across the software lifecycle. Only New Relic is committed to this kind of open ecosystem approach to observability,” added Staples.

Unlike other exchanges that only focus on instrumentation, New Relic I/O introduces an open hub of 400+ quickstarts that moves beyond just instrumentation with pre-built dashboards, alert configurations, user guides and documentation to help software engineers get started with observability via a guided install process. Additionally, New Relic I/O is a community built by the world’s leading observability experts, and each contribution is reviewed by New Relic. Users and partners can easily add new contributions, improve existing quickstarts and provide suggestions to the quickstart repository at any time.

Access Instant Observability for Leading Partner Technologies

As part of New Relic’s commitment to providing open observability, the launch features quickstart contributions from Cribl, Fastly, Gigamon, Kentik, Lacework and Trend Micro to enhance the understanding of application performance in the context of every engineer’s daily workflow. Additionally, New Relic is introducing quickstarts for cloud services, open source tools and enterprise technologies, including Kubernetes, Istio, Apache and Cassandra, so every engineer can get a customized observability view based on their preferred tools and specific use case.

  • Chronosphere Announces Record Revenue, Customer and Employee Growth

New York, NY, Sept. 20, 2021 — Chronosphere, the company redefining monitoring for the cloud-native world, today announced record momentum as it heads into Q4 2021.

“Chronosphere is filling a much needed gap in the marketplace with a scalable, reliable and cost efficient cloud-native monitoring solution. The Chronosphere team has accomplished a tremendous amount in a very short period of time — they are now one of the fastest growing companies in the Greylock portfolio,” said Jerry Chen, partner at Greylock.

Today’s monitoring tools are not equipped to handle the complex and dynamic nature of cloud-native environments and while the recommended open source tools like Prometheus help get companies started, they do not scale.

Chronosphere delivers scalable, reliable and customizable monitoring purpose-built for companies adopting cloud-native. Chronosphere not only allows customers to keep pace with the massive amounts of monitoring data produced by cloud-native environments but it also does so with an order of magnitude more cost efficiency than existing solutions.

Additionally, Chronosphere lets customers understand and control their spending and metrics growth, even as the data continues to grow. This level of visibility and control is the first of its kind in an industry notorious for unexpected and uncontrollable monitoring bills. Chronosphere empowers cloud native engineering organizations to control for data volumes, rampant costs and organizational friction that comes from rapid scale and technical complexity.

Chronosphere’s product is powered by the open source metrics engine M3 that Chronosphere co-founders Martin Mao, CEO, and Rob Skillington, CTO, developed while at Uber and scaled to be one of the largest production monitoring systems in the world, storing tens of billions of time series and analyzing billions of data points per second in real-time.

Martin said: “I’m incredibly proud of the growth we’ve achieved so far this year. We’re helping some of the most advanced engineering organizations in the world gain reliable visibility of their cloud-native workloads while simultaneously helping them control their rampant growth in data volume and cost. These are challenges that no other SaaS provider has been able to address.”

Chronosphere set new records so far this year:

    Revenue Growth
Chronosphere’s multi-million dollar annual recurring revenues saw more than 9 times growth as the company continues to do 6 and 7 figure deals.

    Customer Growth
Chronosphere continued to onboard customers from startups to well-known global brands in the Fortune 500. Chronosphere also saw existing customers significantly expand their usage.

PlanetScale Vice President of Engineering Nicholas Van Wiggeren said: “Chronosphere provides PlanetScale with best-in-class observability without the operational overhead of running complex tooling ourselves.”

Abnormal Security Software Engineer Dhruv Purushottam said: “We evaluated the market thoroughly and found that Chronosphere was the only solution with a first-class focus on both scale and cost management. The expertise they had built from running M3 at Uber was obvious, and we reaped the benefits of their team’s knowledge immediately. We found their team to be attentive and deeply focused on solving their customers’ problems.”

    Employee Growth
Chronosphere added more than 40 employees this year, nearly doubling its employee count from 45 to more than 80. The new hires included a head of product marketing, head of growth marketing and head of sales to form a GTM leadership team to meet the unprecedented demand for Chronosphere. This year the company also transitioned to be remote-first.

    Series B Growth Funding
In January this year, Chronosphere announced $43.4 million in Series B funding, bringing the total raised to $55 million. The round was led by previous investors Greylock, Lux Capital and venture capitalist Lee Fixel with participation from General Atlantic.

    Industry Recognition
Chronosphere has received numerous industry accolades since it was founded in 2019. • How to Apply GitOps on Infrastructure

How to Apply GitOps on Infrastructure

GitOps has become more than a buzzword in the DevOps community. It consists of a set of best practices designed to better deploy, manage and monitor Kubernetes clusters and applications. By adopting GitOps everything becomes code, therefore empowering DevOps teams to control every aspect of the development process from beginning to end.

Viktor Farcic, developer advocate at Upbound, member of the Google Developer Experts and a published author, has been doing GitOps even before the term was coined by Alexis Richardson in 2017. Viktor believes that even though many developers have been doing GitOps for a while, defining what it really is and giving GitOps a name is what has helped with its rapid adoption.

Viktor is one of our outstanding speakers presenting at GitOps Evolution Virtual Summit. During his session, Viktor will talk about GitOps and explore Crossplane combined with Flux as a potential solution for all infrastructure needs and to see whether it fits into the broader Kubernetes ecosystem.

Crossplane is an open-source project that enables engineers to use Kubernetes to provision and manage infrastructure, services and applications. Combined with Flux, it allows us to apply GitOps principles to constantly monitor infrastructure and fix any drifts there are between the current and desired states.

Our very own Jackie Whetzel sat down with Viktor Farcic for a quick interview on GitOps and his upcoming session. Check out a clip of the interview below.

  • Global Demand for Developer-Centric Security Fuels Secure Code Warrior’s Continued Growth

BOSTON & SYDNEY & LONDON, August 24, 2021 — Global secure coding company Secure Code Warrior® has announced the signing of its 400th customer and strong business performance in response to an increased demand for security-aware and security-skilled developers across all industries worldwide.

This milestone achievement follows the onboarding of 120 new enterprise customers across 30 countries within the first half of 2021—including major global retailers, technology juggernauts and manufacturing leaders—alongside doubling the number of licensed users and expanding over 30% of its accounts. In March, Secure Code Warrior signed the biggest customer deal in its company history, bringing an additional 33,000 developers into tailored learning pathways designed to help them deliver secure code faster.

The recent customer acquisitions mean Secure Code Warrior is helping 400 organizations worldwide to improve developers’ software security skills, including Zoom Video, Reddit, Mastercard, the BBC, DBS Bank, the Singapore Government, TotalEnergies and Blue Prism.

Pieter Danhieux, CEO and Co-Founder of Secure Code Warrior, said the company’s growth was driven by organizations prioritizing software security in the face of a growing global cyber threat landscape, and reflected the world showing signs of post-COVID recovery.

“We have seen the ongoing impact of software-related breaches like SolarWinds and increased attacks on critical infrastructure influence government policies and business priorities across the globe. The likes of Biden’s Executive Order and Australia’s state-based cybersecurity strategies highlight the increased need to build developers’ security skills, rather than implement Band-Aid, after the breach ‘remedies’,” Danhieux said.

“The necessity to foster security-conscious developers traverses industries, and we’re working with leading organizations to help secure the software that does amazing things in our world—from government bodies needing to safeguard national assets to automotive manufacturers securing connected systems in cars and beyond.”

Secure Code Warrior’s flagship Learning Platform has been central to its success, with 85% of its customer base embracing the ‘Missions’ offering launched in late 2020, which foster developers’ security-first mindset through hyper-relevant, immersive coding simulations of real-world software vulnerabilities they are challenged to solve through secure coding in a safe environment. The scale-up has an ongoing focus on developing new challenges and has bolstered its platform to support nearly 60 language:frameworks including legacy, cutting-edge and specialized systems.

Non-Executive Director on Secure Code Warrior’s Board and Silicon Valley veteran, Jim Pflaging, spoke highly of the scale-up’s strong growth amid the global pandemic.

“Over the past 18-months, businesses have rapidly accelerated their digital transformation efforts. Now, growth and profitability are closely tied to engaging customers and suppliers with compelling software applications. The spate of high-profile cyberattacks throughout the same period have exposed weaknesses in software development practices, which the Biden administration’s Executive Order is combatting by stating secure coding should be foundational for any government or business entity. As a result, leading organizations worldwide are working with Secure Code Warrior to ‘shift left’ and reduce risk, while empowering teams to ship quality code faster by improving security at the most efficient stage of the software development process,” Pflaging said.

To support its next chapter of growth and scale, Secure Code Warrior has made several key appointments to build and accelerate its go-to-market strategy, including Junie Dinda as its Chief Marketing Officer and Vikram Ghosh in the newly created role of Senior Vice President of Strategic Alliances.

Based in San Francisco, Dinda held marketing leadership positions at Atlassian for over six years, most recently as VP of Marketing for Enterprise and Migrations. She brings extensive knowledge in driving product-led growth into the developer ecosystem and deep expertise in scaling hyper-growth businesses from 50 employees to billion-dollar organizations with 5,000+ staff.

Ghosh joins following four years as Vice President of Business Development at Chef Software and has previously held senior leadership positions at Citrix and Microsoft. Based in Seattle, Ghosh is responsible for spearheading the growth of Secure Code Warrior’s global partner program, which recently announced significant enhancements and expanded integrations with leading DevSecOps vendors.
