  • McAfee Breaks Through XDR Market With SASE-Enriched Threat Protection to Proactively Stop Targeted Attacks

MVISION XDR automates security investigation and response processes with actionable threat insights harnessed from deeply integrated cloud data sources

SAN JOSE, CA, May 18, 2021 — McAfee Corp. (Nasdaq: MCFE), the device to cloud cybersecurity company, today announced significant expansion of its MVISION Extended Detection and Response (XDR) solution by correlating the extensive telemetry of McAfee’s endpoint security solution, Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) solution, and threat intelligence solution powered by MVISION Insights. These integrations protect organizations against the most advanced threats while simplifying security operations with unified control and visibility from device to cloud.

This timing is pivotal, as security operation centers (SOC) are dealing with increasingly sophisticated threat actors targeting remote employees and cloud services using more evasive techniques across expanding digital attack surfaces – making adversaries harder to spot with traditional security controls. A recent survey of IT security professionals by The Enterprise Strategy Group found that the cloud poses the biggest gap for most organizations’ threat detection and response capabilities. Unsurprisingly, according to Ernst & Young, about six in 10 companies have faced a material or significant incident in the past twelve months, however, only 26 percent of companies say their SOC identified their most significant breach.

McAfee MVISION XDR is the first proactive, data-aware, and open XDR platform designed to help organizations stop these sophisticated, multi-vector attacks with unified threat detection and response that connects and fuses disparate endpoint, network, and cloud data sources. Starting today, XDR incidents are enriched with actionable threat insights from McAfee’s SASE solution, which detects cloud threats that occur within web and SaaS environments. It improves situational awareness, drives better and faster decisions, and elevates the SOC to a new level of efficiency and effectiveness.

“SOC processes involve siloed monitoring and detection tools that generate an overwhelming volume of security alerts that often require manual effort to sort through and force analysts to take a reactive posture,” said Shishir Singh, chief product officer of McAfee’s enterprise business. “AI Guided Investigations serves as the catalyst allowing analysts to more effortlessly orchestrate smart and efficient workflows. MVISION XDR delivers end-to-end threat visibility across all attack surfaces, greater context, and situational awareness using automation to streamline operations so organizations can preempt an attack rather than scramble to contain a breach.”

    MVISION XDR capabilities include:

    • Advanced threat detection: Automatically correlates attack telemetry from multiple data sources including endpoint detection and response (EDR), cloud access security broker (CASB), data loss prevention (DLP) and secure web gateway (SWG), and fuses with active threat campaigns to reveal the full picture of an adversary’s work across the entire attack lifecycle.
    • Automated threat management tasks: By combining the latest machine learning techniques with human analysis, MVISION XDR simplifies analyst workflows across complex threat campaigns with AI-guided investigations and MITRE ATT&CK™ mapping to accelerate investigation and move more rapidly to resolution.
    • Proactive threat hunting and optimized response: The integration of MVISION Insights with MVISION Cloud Security Advisor delivers actionable intelligence to security teams through correlated security posture scoring across all vectors – from endpoints to the cloud – that helps them strengthen security hygiene and advance investigations and analysis with critical context on threat groups.

“MVISION XDR is designed with the SOC experience in mind,” said Ariel, Banco Delta (Panama). “It can grant analysts greater control, along with a more comprehensive view of threat context beyond the endpoint – saving time and allowing us to act more deliberately with a better understanding of threats – before they occur or incur damage.”

“Threat detection doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Without weaving together forensic data from endpoint and non-endpoint sources to paint the bigger picture kill chain, it’s incredibly difficult to see attackers traversing your environment and answer the investigative questions that matter to SOC teams,” said Chris Kissel, research director, IDC. “XDR is the next logical step from EDR. McAfee’s XDR has significant potential to achieve what security analytics tools have largely been unable to offer by natively integrating more types of telemetry with threat intel into a single user experience for detection and response.”

The new capabilities in MVISION XDR are available today. Attendees of RSA Conference can register here for McAfee’s virtual booth.

  • Kentik Brings Network Observability to Public Cloud Environments

Company Tackles Top Three Cloud Issues for Enterprises: Visibility, Performance and Cost Control

San Francisco, CA, May 18, 2021 — Kentik®, the network observability company, today announced the launch of Kentik Cloud, a new product suite for public cloud environments. As part of the Kentik platform, Kentik Cloud fuses traffic and telemetry data with business, security, internet and cloud metadata to give enterprise customers increased visibility, improved performance and better cost control of the networking that connects their entire cloud environment.

Cloud-forward companies like Box, eBay, Dropbox, IBM, Kayak and Zoom use Kentik to plan, run and fix their networks. The launch of Kentik Cloud extends observability to public clouds, putting forward the industry’s most comprehensive way to visualize cloud network performance, troubleshoot connectivity issues, control and reduce traffic costs, optimize service delivery, migrate apps to the cloud and secure cloud environments from network attacks.

In a recent article, Major League Baseball’s Principal Network Automation Engineer Jeremy Schulman discussed how Kentik helps the sports league see “how much traffic is going in and out of various projects in the cloud. [Kentik] is actually showing you a visual representation of how your physical equipment connects via those virtual private connections in the cloud. It also gives us information like latency, throughput, and jitter, across on-prem, through the cloud, and back on-prem.”

Kentik Cloud expands on the company’s existing cloud monitoring capabilities with four core new feature sets:

    • Observation Deck™: an integrated user experience with configurable widgets that lets users put their most important data and insights front and center, and quickly answer any question about the network, using all types of network telemetry and contextual data.
    • Kentik Map: an end-to-end visual depiction of virtual private clouds (VPCs), on-premises networks and the connectivity between them to see traffic to and through the cloud network elements for faster troubleshooting. This feature also brings together AWS CloudWatch and infrastructure health metrics.
    • Cloud Performance Monitor: a feature that automatically detects the most important network paths used inside cloud networks and interconnections to on-prem networks. Proactive tests measure latency, jitter and packet loss data, and interface with Kentik’s large network of public cloud agents for easy performance monitoring of internet and multi-cloud services.
    • Cloud Traffic Cost Explorer: a tool to automatically calculate actual costs of cloud network traffic over time, as well as cost projections by group and account, helping to lower data transfer costs by quickly finding traffic inefficiencies.

“We built the Kentik Cloud product suite because we saw our customers struggling to run cloud networks with the precision and control that they’re accustomed to,” said Christoph Pfister, Chief Product Officer at Kentik. “Most cloud monitoring tools don’t focus on infrastructure or can’t see beyond a single cloud environment — and the old networking tools simply don’t keep up with the pace of CloudOps, if they even understand cloud networking constructs or VPC Flow Logs. With Kentik Cloud, our customers can manage the performance, visibility and costs of their cloud networking, at-scale and all within one solution.”

For more information on Kentik Cloud, sign up to attend the next Kentik Virtual Design Clinic on Wednesday, June 23, 2021.

  • Introducing CockroachDB 21.1: The World’s Most Powerful Global Database is Now Also the Easiest

Leading cloud-native SQL database makes managing data anywhere in the world as simple as a single SQL command

New York, May 18, 2021 — Cockroach Labs today announced the release of CockroachDB 21.1, a substantial leap forward for the industry-leading distributed SQL database. CockroachDB already has a reputation as the world’s most powerful global database, and with this latest release it’s now also the easiest. CockroachDB 21.1 makes it dead simple to tie data to specific locations anywhere in the world within a single database — ensuring regulatory compliance, reducing latency, and improving fault-tolerance. CockroachDB 21.1 enables any developer — no matter their expertise — to start small, scale fast, and go global effortlessly.

Today’s users demand an always-on, near-instantaneous experience, no matter where they are on the planet, and deployment of a database across multiple regions lets you meet these  requirements. However, this has historically been incredibly costly or an operational nightmare.  With its unique architecture and built-in ability to manage the location of data, CockroachDB has eliminated the majority of the challenges of distributing data anywhere in the world.

The ability to tie data to a location is a capability used by hundreds of CockroachDB customers, and now using that feature has been reduced to a few simple SQL statements. This new approach makes geo-locating data accessible in seconds to any developer who can write SQL. Deploying data globally also now requires no forethought—even if you start with a single region, at any time you can simply add CockroachDB nodes to another location (available instantly in the cloud) and activate these features without downtime, schema changes, or manual sharding of any kind. You can now deliver a fast and reliable user experience to anyone in the world with a single SQL statement.

“Our mission has always been to make building truly breakthrough applications easy for any developer. Too many development teams start on a platform that’s merely ‘good enough,’ and are then either hamstrung when their business grows, or have to suffer the pain of a migration,” said Spencer Kimball, CEO and cofounder at Cockroach Labs. “Your aspirations should not be constrained by your infrastructure. With CockroachDB 21.1, anyone can build their application from the beginning on a database that can take them from one cloud region to a global footprint, from three people in a garage to a multi-million dollar business.”

CockroachDB dramatically reduces operational complexity and makes it easy to deliver fast, reliable customer experiences by:

    • minimizing transactional latency by placing data physically close to end users,
    • eliminating outages with redundancies that can survives entire region or cloud failures,
    • supporting data privacy compliance by storing data within local boundaries,
    • and delivering a multi-cloud/hybrid-cloud deployment to eliminate risk and costs of an “all-in” single cloud approach

From Fortune 500 companies to five person startups, companies across the globe in every industry are using CockroachDB to transform their business. For example, DoorDash is using CockroachDB to handle large activity spikes within particular regions while maintaining consistent transactions. SpaceX uses CockroachDB to manage and store operational data for the largest constellation of satellites in the world. Other customers include Comcast, eBay, Norfolk Southern, LaunchDarkly, Lush, Tokopedia, and Mythical Games.

Additional updates in CockroachDB 21.1 enable developers to:

Intertek NTA have traditionally offered the Cybersecurity Awareness Training program in a face-to-face classroom setting, but with the increase in remote working, organizations Intertek NTA serves have not been able to execute classroom-led training. To accommodate the new normal of remote work, Wisetail and Intertek NTA teamed up to augment the traditional in-class training to ensure customers are still able to provide the critical training to their employees that is required to stay safe in the digital world.

The eLearning training can be delivered over a number of remote working/collaboration platforms, including the Wisetail LMS/LXP software. It can also be purchased via the Wisetail Shopify Library or can be delivered via SCORM to a learning portal.

Wisetail and Intertek NTA’s Cybersecurity Awareness Training package consists of the following components as standard. Modules are flexible depending on organizational policy and the desired outcome of the exercise.

    • Why is Cybersecurity Important?

    • How Organizations are Hacked

    • Password Best Practices

    • Social Engineering

    • Internet and Email Usage

    • Social Media

    • Using Public Wi-Fi

“We’re very excited to announce the Cybersecurity Awareness Training alongside our partners at Intertek NTA,” said Glenn Veil, CTO and VP of engineering at Wisetail. “Most people assume that cyber attacks can only be avoided with expensive, high-tech security software, and while those kinds of tools are very useful (and essential), the truth is that people have more power than they think. Just by doing little things like changing passwords regularly or knowing the signs of a phishing scam, every employee can help take control of their company’s cybersecurity and keep hackers one step behind.”

“Intertek NTA is passionate about helping our clients improve their cybersecurity,” said Tony Walker, connected world global business line leader at Intertek. “Our Cybersecurity Awareness Training is built from insights into the role of human error in cybersecurity failures that we’ve learned from penetration testing and social engineering engagements over many years. We’re delighted to be partnering with Wisetail’s online platform to bring this vital training to many more customers across the globe.”
