Apica Adds AI Agents and MCP Server to Platform for Managing Telemetry Data

Apica today added an artificial intelligence (AI) agent and Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to version 3.0 of its Ascent platform for managing telemetry data pipelines.

Andi Mann, chief product and technology officer for Apica, said the AI agent, dubbed Venn, makes it possible for IT teams to use natural language rather than having to create scripts to build and manage data pipelines at higher levels of scale.

The MCP server, meanwhile, makes it possible for IT teams to use third-party AI tools to invoke the Ascent platform and its multiple embedded AI skills within the context of a DevOps workflow.

Finally, a flow-only mode capability has been added to the platform to enable telemetry data to flow 10x faster. That additional capacity will prove critical as more AI agents are added to IT environments, said Mann.

Just as importantly, however, any change that could delete or materially alter configuration requires the consent of an administrator before being applied to ensure no action is performed without approval, noted Mann.

The overall goal is to provide an intelligent foundation for managing telemetry data that, for example, makes it simpler to discover a noisy pipeline, he added.

Longer term, that intelligent foundation will be invoked via multiple communications channels, including Slack and Microsoft Teams, to further reduce the level of friction and bottlenecks that exist with DevOps workflows, said Mann.

It’s not clear at what rate DevOps teams are moving to find more efficient ways to manage telemetry data, but the volume of it is only going to increase in the AI era. In some cases, that may mean increasing the volume of data through existing pipelines, but before too long, the total number of pipelines that DevOps teams will be asked to manage will also increase. Additionally, that data is going to become more crucial than ever as DevOps teams seek to observe events that are increasingly occurring at machine speed.

In general, the Futurum Group is forecasting that total spending on DevOps tools and platforms will grow about 14% in 2027, and 72% plan to significantly increase investment (41%) or slightly increase spending (31%) over the next 12 months. The Futurum Group now projects global spending on software lifecycle engineering tools will roughly double to $226 billion by 2030, up from $111.1 billion in 2025. Spending on agent control planes and agentic development will compound at 48.7% and 45.1%, respectively, through 2030, according to the report.

Hopefully, those investments will soon lead to a day when rather than having to interrogate telemetry data, the systems that process and filter it will become intelligent enough to identify issues that they will then share with other tools and platforms capable of automatically resolving them with human supervision. The simple fact of the matter is that IT environments are already far too complex for humans to manage. The challenge and the opportunity now is to find ways to apply AI to achieve that goal while ensuring that, in the event something goes wrong, the proverbial cure doesn’t wind up being worse than the disease.

Apica Extends Scope and Reach of Platform for Managing Telemetry Data

Apica today updated its Ascent platform to add support for synthetic data that is increasingly being used by artificial intelligence (AI) agents to observe application environments.

Version 2.16 of the platform adds support for a set of real user monitoring (RUM) and service level objective (SLO) dashboards, an ability to correlate changes made to any given rule to the cost of processing telemetry data, and additional performance enhancements.

Andi Mann, chief product technology officer for Apica, said collectively these updates will make it more feasible for DevOps teams to feed telemetry data at scale into observability platforms in a way that enables them to better control costs.

As application environments have become more complex, the amount of telemetry data being generated has exponentially increased. Fortunately, it has become easier to collect that data using, for example, open source OpenTelemetry software. However, many DevOps teams are now trying to manage massive amounts of telemetry data.

The Ascent platform from Apica is designed to provide a means to process, transform, enrich, and govern telemetry data prior to it being stored in an observability platform. That approach provides DevOps teams with the control mechanism they need to ensure only the most relevant telemetry data is passed on to an observability platform where costs are often determined by how much data is being stored.

It’s not clear to what extent DevOps teams are now employing observability platforms to identify the root cause of an application issue, but a recent Futurum Group survey finds well over a third (36%) are planning on spending more than $1 million on observability in 2026, with 7% planning to spend in excess of $5 million.

Arguably, existing observability challenges will almost certainly be further exacerbated by the rise of AI coding. As more AI agents are used to generate code, the number of applications that will be deployed in production environments will only continue to exponentially increase. In many cases, DevOps teams will not understand how these applications have been actually constructed unless they are able to analyze telemetry data.

On the plus side, most observability platforms are adding AI agents that should make it simpler to analyze massive amounts of telemetry data. The challenge is making sure the right telemetry data is discoverable at the right time without increasing costs to the point where observability becomes unsustainable.

Hopefully, there will come a day when incident management becomes much less stressful than it has historically been. More than a few DevOps teams have spent months looking for the root cause of an issue that once discovered was solved in a few minutes. Observability platforms should make it much simpler to discover and remediate those issues long before an application is ever deployed in a production environment. Of course, there will still likely be hundreds of legacy applications running in production environments that may not all be as equally well instrumented but as AI advances continue to be made the number of applications that are generating useful telemetry data is only going to continue to rapidly decline.

Apica Acquires LOGIQ.AI to Unify Observability

Apica, a provider of a synthetic monitoring and observability platform, has just raised an additional $10 million in funding and has agreed to acquire LOGIQ.AI. LOGIQ.AI is a provider of a data fabric infused with machine learning algorithms.

Jason Haworth, chief product officer for Apica, said the data fabric developed by LOGIQ.AI will be incorporated into the Apica Ascent platform in the third quarter. The LOGIQ.AI addition will apply artificial intelligence (AI) in a way that both optimizes and enriches data collected by the company’s observability platform.

At the core of the Apica Ascent platform is an indexing engine built on top of a Kubernetes platform that aggregates data such as logs, traces and network packets from multiple sources. As part of that process, the platform reduces storage costs by trimming excess data that can be stored in a data lake it provides or a third-party data lake a customer prefers.

At the same time, Apica also enables DevOps teams to both normalize data collected from multiple sources and enrich it to add additional context, said Haworth.

The overall goal is to provide a unified view of all IT data to accelerate faster root cause analysis and reduce the total cost of collecting the data required, he added.

Apica is making a case for an observability platform that goes beyond collecting data from DevOps platforms. As IT environments become more complex, IT teams need to be able to correlate data collected from a wide range of data sources to accurately determine the root cause of an issue, said Haworth.

The challenge is managing the massive amount of data that needs to be continuously collected, stored and analyzed to achieve that goal, he added. The acquisition of LOGIQ.AI will enable Apica to embed a data fabric that employs machine learning algorithms and other data science techniques to make it feasible to observe complex IT environments at scale, noted Haworth.

It’s still early days as far as observability is concerned, but it’s clear that IT teams need to move beyond monitoring a pre-determined set of metrics to manage complex and dynamic application environments. The rate of change to application environments as updates are made requires an ability to query data to determine the root cause of issues that could be caused by any number of dependencies.

The issue is that even when IT teams have access to an observability platform, they may not have the knowledge and expertise required to craft the queries needed to determine the root cause of an issue. Machine learning algorithms will play a major role in enabling IT teams to proactively discover issues that they can investigate using the suggested queries.

It’s only a matter of time before most IT organizations unify observability data within a single platform. That will make it simpler for them to collaborate across teams and should result in fewer disruptions as IT issues are discovered more quickly. After all, the best kind of IT incident is the one that never happened or that was too trivial for anyone outside of IT to even notice.

Next, the described YAML determines what the script should do and then the script is generated. The YAML syntax includes full support for extracting and assigning dynamic data using for example JSONPath, XPath, Regex, etc. The advantage is that created scripts can then be used for both synthetic monitoring and performance tests.
