Ariel Tseitlin

Ariel Tseitlin is a Partner at Scale Venture Partners where he focuses on enterprise software investments in cloud, big data, security, and mobile. Ariel joined ScaleVP from Netflix, where he was Director of Cloud Solutions and responsible for creating and operating one of the most modern cloud infrastructures in the industry, accounting for a full third of all US downstream internet traffic at peak. Ariel’s team built many of the Netflix OSS components like Asgard and the Simian Army, including the Chaos Monkey, making the Netflix streaming service more resilient, reliable, and manageable. Prior to Netflix, Ariel was VP of Technology and Products at Sungevity and before that was the Founder & CEO of CTOWorks, a software consultancy helping early-stage entrepreneurs deliver their first product to market. Earlier in his career, Ariel held senior management positions at Siebel Systems and Oracle. Ariel holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from UC Berkeley and an MBA with honors from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Abstract: Conventional product development thinking forces a tradeoff between the rate of innovation (i.e. development velocity) and quality (and availability), often depicted as an indifference curve along the two dimensions. However, by investing in automation and other DevOps best-practices, one can shift the curve to increase both rate of innovation and quality. We’ll highlight a few key areas, with past examples from Netflix, that are especially effective.

Chris Riley

Bio: Chris Riley is a technologist. Helping organizations make the transition from traditional development practices to a modern set of culture, tooling, and processes that increase the release frequency and quality of software. He is an O’Reilly author, speaker, and subject matter expert in the area of DevOps Strategy, Machine Learning, and Information Management.

Abstract: Navigating the Dev Tools Market. I have been working a lot with the vendors in the space, and I have realized first and foremost that this market is terribly fragmented, and hard to navigate, and second that there seems to be general trends happening which show some convergence on the future of tools in the space. I will discuss my findings and recomendations.

Jason Hand

Bio:Jason Hand is VictorOps’ DevOps Evangelist pulling from 15 years of experience as a developer, a system administrator, and a support specialist. He is Fully emerged in to the world of Agile development and the DevOps movement from working for 3 tech startups in Boulder. Jason is an avid outdoorsmen and adrenaline junky. Lover of fun. Abstract: What they did not anticipate, but were the aspects of BYOD that would end up costing them a lot more in the long run.

Matthew Selheimer

Bio: Matthew Selheimer is Chief Technical Evangelist and SVP of Marketing for ITinvolve, Inc. He serves as the chief external spokesperson and technical evangelist for ITinvolve’s innovative and award- winning IT agility applications, and is responsible for all marketing functions including corporate and product positioning, demand generation, analyst and media relations, and social media engagement. In his twenty-year IT industry career, Matthew has demonstrated rich and diverse experience spanning IT management software, enterprise business applications, data center hardware and consulting businesses. Previously, he has held executive marketing and product management positions at BMC Software, as well as sales, business development, alliance management, systems engineering, and consulting positions at Informatica Corporation, Compaq Computer, and Deloitte & Touche. Matthew holds an MBA from Texas A&M University and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Abstract: The Key to DevOps Success – Managing Cross-Silo Collaboration. Collaboration is essential to DevOps, yet how to do it is often unclear with many teams falling back on ineffective conference calls, instant messaging, documents, and SharePoint sites. In this keynote, ITinvolve chief technical evangelist, Matthew Selheimer, will share a vision for a next generation “DevOps 2.0” where collaboration, continuous documentation, and knowledge capture are combined with automation toolchains to enable rapid innovation and deployment. Matt will apply this vision to practical DevOps questions such as how do we more effectively collaborate on changing requirements across all stakeholders without creating an additional burden, and how can we more effectively merge “creation” with “operations” activities to enable continuous, seamless deployments? These questions and more will also be explored through a live demonstration.

Bio: Ruston Vickers is Chief DevOps Architect and Senior Vice President of Product Management and Strategy of Application Delivery at CA Technologies. He is responsible of providing customers with counsel on their DevOps strategies to help them deliver higher quality software and services to market faster.

Sanjeev Sharma

Bio: Sanjeev is a 20-year veteran of the software industry. For the past 18 years he has been a solution architect with Rational Software, an IBM brand. His areas of expertise include DevOps, Mobile Development, Agile Transformation, Application Lifecycle Management and Software Supply Chains. He is a DevOps Thought Leader at IBM and currently leads IBM’s Worldwide Technical Sales team. He speaks regularly at conferences and has written several papers. Sanjeev is also author of ‘DevOps for Dummies, published by Wiley in October 2013.

Abstract: DevOps takes a Lean view of ‘streamlining’ the delivery pipeline by eliminating bottlenecks. The Toyota approach to Lean Manufacturing streamlined the assembly line with ‘Kaizen’ or Continuous Improvement. Methodologies like SaFE take agile approaches to the next step by introducing true Lean approaches to eliminating bottlenecks by leveraging lean measurements. DevOps extends this Lean approach to the entire Application Delivery process in the Enterprise – from the Line of business to development to QA to operations. This session will explores the lean roots of DevOps and how Lean practices are being leveraged to drive DevOps adoptions in Enterprises.

Camp DevOps Houston: Call for speakers

I am very happy to announce that our next Camp DevOps event will be in Houston on October 28, 2014. The conference will take place at the Norris Conference Center in City Centre, Houston. Camp DevOps Houston will be a one day event featuring keynotes, business orientated and technical tracks. There will also be ad hoc panels and more. We are today opening up the call for speakers for Camp DevOps Houston. More information on that below.

The Norris Conference Center in City Centre is a premiere event location. Featuring state-of-the-art facilities, AV equipped, soundproof rooms and complimentary wifi, Norris Conference Center also features Ergonomic Seating, Full Spectrum Lighting, Individual Room Thermostat Controls and Free Parking. Oh and did we mention great food?

Following up on our successful Camp DevOps Boulder event, the Houston event is aimed squarely at the Enterprise DevOps market. We could not pick a better location for this than Houston, Texas. Houston of course is the capital of the energy industry and one of the largest cities in the US. Besides companies directly in the energy field, there are a wide variety of enterprises that support the energy industry, as well as other large enterprises based in Houston. Biz DevOps sessions are aimed at the business side of DevOps. Technical tracks should be highly technical, assuming a high degree of proficiency of audience members.

We will announce the selected speakers by August 31, 2014. All speakers are responsible for their own expenses to attend the event.

Besides schedule track sessions, Camp DevOps Houston will feature ad hoc panels. Growing out of our experience in Boulder, we have round tables set up for on announced topics. What’s new @DevOps.com

All of us here at staging-devopsy.kinsta.cloud have been very busy. In addition to adding some new writers and great new content, we have been working “outside the 4 walls of the website”. Here is an update on what’s new:

1. Camp DevOps – We held our first Camp DevOps event last week in beautiful Boulder, Colorado at the University of Colorado, Boulder Campus. It was a great event featuring a lot of great sessions. Sanjeev Sharma of IBM, author of DevOps for Dummies (and a staging-devopsy.kinsta.cloud contributor) kicked things off with a great keynote. Andi Mann of CA had a great talk on implanting DevOps from the top down. Rajat Bhargava and Topher Marie of JumpCloud also had some great insights in their sessions. Rich Mogull’s “KickaaS Security” session was a great look at the top things you need in terms of security. Another very popular track was Craftsy VP of engineering, Matthew Boeckman’s using S3 and Glacier for backup. There were some other great sessions but I can mention them all here. You can check out the Camp DevOps website for the full agenda.

We will be conducting more Camp DevOps in the near future in cities throughout the US. Some will be in conjunction with larger events or conferences within conferences, others will stand alone events. Stay tuned for more details.

I was asked the question of whether Camp DevOps competes with DevOps Days. Short answer, no. We support DevOps Days and the culture they represent. Camp DevOps shares with DevOps Days the desire to advance DevOps, but takes a slightly different tack. We will have both highly technical, as well as business orientated tracks. Camp DevOps will feature both learning on DevOps culture, as well as tools. We will also be adding more exclusive Camp DevOps activities to the events in the future.

2. Gluecon 2014 – Camp DevOps Boulder was held in conjunction with Gluecon in nearby Broomfield. Gluecon was fantastic this year and also featured a full DevOps lineup. I was the moderator of the DevOps tracks on day one. Again some real quality presentations on Ansible, Saltstack and more. We will be posting video here soon.

Let DevOps be a business process

I just returned from an amazing time at the first Camp DevOps in Boulder, CO. It was held at University of Colorado, Boulder and in conjunction with Gluecon 2014. This is the first conference I have attended that was singularly focused on DevOps. I found the three track format at the show had something for everyone. A technical track, a business track and some great DevOps round table discussions with great panel speakers. My takeaway was that DevOps is not just a cultural thing as some claim. DevOps needs to be perceived more as a business process or it will just be a passing fancy. Some may disagree with that view but 35+ years of IT industry experience gives me a bit of a long view.

Gene Kim enlightened me on some issues in his recent response in the Wall Street Journal with some facts about what is going on within traditional legacy Fortune 500 companies. They are implementing DevOps strategies in a big way. My take is that it is not noticeable within the Fortune 500 because DevOps is viewed by the Fortune 500 as a business process, as opposed to being an implementable organizational structure. Sort of like the DevOps is not really a job title argument. If it is a business process, no one has DevOps in their title, but it doesn’t mean DevOps is not being done there.

I think most of us want to see DevOps cross the chasm and become a de facto standard. Since Patrick Debois first coined the term “DevOps” there is no question that DevOps has developed into a global movement. Of course DevOps has its cynics. Pessimists say DevOps is a new name for a Sys Admin, the flippant say DevOps is just a front for some fanatical developers trying to liberate the world from operations or DevOps is just some foolish operations people trying to make nice with Developers. That it means the extinction of QA job is another familiar mantra.

I’ve spent a lot of time trying to understand the lack of cohesiveness within the DevOps movement and everyone telling everyone else what DevOps is and what it should be. As with anything else the marketplace will decide the future and fate of Devops. During this process, I’ve begun to notice a common misconception that I think is fueling much of the reactions that some people have to DevOps ideas. Holding DevOps back is not a technology problem or a cultural problem.

In order for DevOps to happen I realized we all need to keep pushing this philosophy forward. We cannot worry ourselves with culture, commercialization or technology. Technology plays a critical role in facilitating solutions to DevOps problems. However, DevOps itself is, at its core, a business issue. The most fundamental business process in any company is getting from concept to completion with the end result of profitability.

If you remove the perspective of the business process, what is left? You’ve got a whole lot of people and groups doing their own thing. Lost is the motivation to battle inefficiency, duplication of effort, turf wars, and disparate groups. It’s a free for all.

If we don’t let DevOps take its course within the market place and embrace the business process, jobs are lost. We are able to do what we do because of the business of DevOps. If we don’t all push the commercialization of DevOps then we have nothing but a chat room to talk philosophy.

The sole purpose of DevOps is to enable, big and small alike, business to react to market forces quickly, efficiently, and reliably. Without the commercialization, there is no other reason for us to be talking about DevOps problems, much less spending any time solving them.

What’s new at staging-devopsy.kinsta.cloud

Things have been very busy at staging-devopsy.kinsta.cloud these past weeks. After a hectic first month, we are trying to execute on some of our ideas around building staging-devopsy.kinsta.cloud into a valuable asset and linchpin of the DevOps community. To that end I wanted to hit on three initiatives that we have kicked off over the past weeks here:

1. Camp DevOps @Gluecon 2014 – Our very first conference held in conjunction with the popular Glue Conference. Camp DevOps will be held Tuesday, May 20^that the beautiful Atlas Building in the University of Colorado. We have a great lineup of speakers including Sanjeev Sharma of IBM, JP Morgenthal, Rich Mogull and many more. We are also going to do our first Hello World sessions where attendees will get hands on training on some key products. Admission including meals is just $49.99 and you receive a $100 dollar credit for Gluecon. If you are already registered for GlueCon admission is free, but you still have to register. 2. staging-devopsy.kinsta.cloud Business Directory – Something we realized in doing our research around staging-devopsy.kinsta.cloud is that there was really no directory of all of the companies that offer DevOps related tools and services. So we started the staging-devopsy.kinsta.cloud business directory. Regular listings are free. If your company is already listed (we listed about 50 companies or so), feel free to go in and claim your listing. Edit, change or upgrade it to make it look the way you want. The idea is that someone looking for a particular tool or service can find potential solutions in one easy directory. 3. DevOps Job Board @DevOps.com – Any perusal of Google Alerts on DevOps or even twitter search on #DevOps will make it obvious that there are a lot of DevOps jobs out there. Whether you are of the belief that DevOps is a real job title or not, there is no denying the need for people with DevOps skills. We are launching a DevOps job board this week on staging-devopsy.kinsta.cloud. Right now it is just the functionality and not dressed up with graphics and stuff. But you can see the job listings (we have 3 or so jobs listed) at staging-devopsy.kinsta.cloud/jobs. From the menu on the right of the page, you can add new jobs, search etc.

We are offering free listings on the job board for the rest of this month, so if you are trying to hire someone with DevOps skils or a DevOps title, feel free to list your job. The job board is not just for full time positions either. You can list part-time, consulting and other types of jobs as well related to DevOps.

4. Media sponsorships for MongoDB World and DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo – We will be providing coverage from the show for both of these great events, as well as feature stories leading up to them. They are both in NYC in June. We will have more information on both of these shortly.
