Zencoder Adds OpenClaw Alternative to AI Coding Portfolio

Zencoder today extended its artificial intelligence (AI) agent platform for generating code to include an offering that enables application developers to automate a range of tasks that go well beyond writing code.

Company CEO Andrew Filev said Zenflow Work takes advantage of the core orchestration platform that Zencoder created to automate planning, reporting and communication tasks. In effect, it provides developers with a secure alternative to general-purpose OpenClaw AI agents in a way that is easier to deploy and manage, he added.

Designed to integrate with Jira, Linear, Notion, Gmail, Google Docs, and other applications that support the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and OAuth interfaces, the overall goal is to enable application developers to more easily automate the routine tasks that today consume as much as three-quarters of their time, said Filev.

For example, Zenflow Work can be configured to search the Jira project management application from Atlassian to discover any updates in the last 24 hours. In addition to creating a summary, it will then group them by what shipped, what’s in progress, and what has been blocked.

Zenflow Work can also be used to read pull requests (PR) that have been recently merged, which can then be categorized by feature, fix, and improvement before creating release notes in a Google Docs file. The agent can also pull completed and rolled-over issues, calculate completion rate by team member, identify re-estimated items, and write findings in the Notion AI application that many developers now use to track projects. Similarly, after an AI agent reads a PR that has been merged it can write a marketing brief for each user-facing change.

Mitch Ashley, vice president and practice lead for software lifecycle engineering at the Futurum Group, said Zencoder’s expansion into workflow orchestration across planning, communication, and reporting will make it simpler to coordinate tasks across the full software lifecycle.

Application development teams evaluating AI platforms for engineering productivity now face a broader question: which vendor owns the coordination layer surrounding the code, he added. Teams that instrument only code generation leave the majority of workflow friction untouched, and orchestration platforms are filling that gap, noted Ashley.

In general, Zencoder is making a case for an AI coding agent platform that is agnostic in terms of which large language models (LLMs) are employed. That approach enables application development teams to dynamically assign tasks to an LLM based on cost and the level of reasoning required, said Filev. In some cases, Zencoder customers have been able to reduce their costs by as much as 70%, he added.

Regardless of approach, the one thing that is clear is that each provider of an LLM is leap frogging the other in terms of the reasoning capabilities, so DevOps teams should take care not to find themselves locked into one provider. Each DevOps team will need to decide how best to achieve that goal but increasingly LLMs are becoming commodities much like any other service a DevOps team already invokes.

Zencoder Adds CLI Edition of AI Agent That Generates Code

Zencoder this week added a command line interface (CLI) option to its artificial intelligence (AI) agent for creating code.

Company CEO Andrew Filev said application development teams can use Zen CLI as an alternative to previous support for integrated development environments. The overall goal is to provide developers with a range of options to take advantage of AI coding from within whatever development environment they prefer, he added.

Zencoder is making a case for an AI agent that simultaneously indexes code patterns and dependencies across repositories. That capability then makes it easier to generate and update code across multiple files in a way that also validates code against syntax rules, project conventions, and integration requirements.

Designed to be integrated with continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) platforms such as Jenkins and others, the Zencoder AI agent can resolve issues, implement fixes, improve code quality, generate and run tests, and create documentation. As such, the goal is not just to write more code faster, but rather enable DevOps teams to take advantage of AI agents running in the background to re-engineer workflows in ways that result in more applications being deployed faster, said Filev.

Less clear is to what degree AI tools are benefitting senior developers more than junior ones. In theory, AI tools should automate tasks that were once handed off to junior developers. However, it’s also arguable that as AI agents evolve they will be able to take advantage of more advanced reasoning capabilities to build more sophisticated applications without the aid of a senior developer. One way or another, AI will make it easier for generalists to build, deploy and update applications, noted Filev.

Regardless of who is using these tools, the volume of code being generated is already substantially increasing. However, the quality of the code being generated can vary widely. In addition to creating more vulnerabilities because many of the examples used to train large language models (LLMs) are from a cybersecurity perspective significantly flawed. More challenging still, much of that code is verbose which many developers are finding challenging to debug simply because they didn’t write the code themselves.

Additionally, application development teams need to carefully consider which LLMs are being used to build applications. The cost of using one model versus another can vary substantially, so some care needs to be taken to use the right tool based on actual business value that application represents, noted Filev.

At this point, it’s only a matter of time before code being created using AI tools will overwhelm existing DevOps pipelines and workflows so the need for AI agents to automate more tasks is rapidly becoming self-evident. In fact, there is already no shortage of AI tools and platforms for writing and testing code. Unfortunately, many organizations still lack a cohesive strategy, so many individual developers for better or worse are naturally experimenting with different tools and approaches on their own. The challenge now is deciding which one of these tools and platforms best suits the needs of the organization versus being a tool that one individual developer happens to prefer over another.

ZenCoder Update to AI Coding Platform Tightens DevOps Integration

ZenCoder has updated its artificial intelligence (AI) platform for writing and testing code to provide integration with third-party DevOps tools such as JIRA, GitHub, GitLab and Sentry in addition to tighter coupling with VS Code and JetBrains integrated development environments.

At the same time, the company has added a “Coffee Mode” capability that now allows Zebcoder AI agents to perform tasks in the background.

Finally, Zencoder reports that with this update it has, based on the SWE-Bench-Multimodal benchmark, improved overall performance by a factor of two.

ZenCoder CEO Andrew Filev said the overall goal is to accelerate application development by integrating the company’s namesake AI platform more deeply into DevOps workflows.

The Zencoder platform, in addition to generating code, is also able to repair code, create tests and optimize code in real time using built-in static analysis capabilities. It makes use of multiple proprietary and open-source large language models (LLMs) to train agents to handle each of those tasks.

Rival approaches are, as a result, more prone to hallucinate in ways that generate flawed code, noted Filev. Zencoder solves that issue by providing development teams with a set of AI agents that can apply static analysis to code as it is being developed. For example, a Repo Grokking agent analyzes the entire code repository to provide the appropriate level of context required to generate code before an Agentic Repair agent creates a pipeline that automatically analyzes, fixes and refines generated code.

Most other AI tools don’t provide that level of context, resulting in code that actually won’t run in its intended production environment, noted Filev. Application developers are also unable to debug that code simply, because they don’t have any insights into how it was created by the AI tool, he added.

It’s not clear how many organizations are relying on AI to help build applications faster. A recent Futurum Research survey finds 41% of respondents expect generative AI tools and platforms will be used to generate, review and test code, while 39% plan to make use of AI models based on machine learning algorithms.

There is at this point no shortage of AI tools and platforms for writing and testing code. The challenge now is deciding which one best suits the needs of the organization versus any given individual developer. Unfortunately, many organizations still lack a coherent strategy so, as a result, many individual developers are experimenting with different tools and approaches without any overall organizational cohesion.

It’s not so much a question of whether or not AI will be relied on to build and deploy applications so much as it is the degree. Each application development team should, at the very least, now be experimenting with these tools. Actual usage of them to write code that will actually run in a production environment, however, will still require humans to know how that code has been constructed.

There is, of course, always pressure to build and deploy software faster. The issue is that it’s one thing to make a mistake when prototyping an application. It’s quite another to discover that mistake after an application has already been deployed in a production environment.
