  • Linux Foundation Public Health creates the Global COVID Certificate Network (GCCN)

San Francisco, CA, June 8, 2021 — Linux Foundation Public Health (LFPH) today announces the launch of the Global COVID Certificate Network (GCCN) to facilitate the safe and free movement of individuals globally during the COVID pandemic. GCCN will establish a global trust registry network that enables interoperable and trustworthy exchanges of COVID certificates among countries for safe reopening and provide related technology and guidance for implementation. The effort is initially supported by Affinidi, AOKPass, Blockchain Labs, Evernym, IBM, Indicio.Tech, LACChain, Lumedic, Proof Market and ThoughtWorks, who have implemented COVID certificate or pass systems for governments and industries. LFPH will work with them to define and implement GCCN.

With the go-live of the EU Digital COVID Certificate (previously called the Digital Green Certificate), the lack of a global trust architecture and ready-to-deploy tools to build compatible systems in other countries could not be more clear. LFPH is launching GCCN to address this gap, with an initial focus on safely reopening borders between EU and non-EU countries. It follows and operationalizes the Interoperability Blueprint (the “Blueprint”) of the Good Health Pass Collaborative (GHPC), an industry coalition that has defined principles and standards for COVID certificates. LFPH has co-led the process drafting the Blueprint, which was released on Monday for a period of public review.

Eva Kaili, MEP and Chair of the STOA Panel of the European Parliament shared: “We are interested to learn about how LFPH is taking bold steps in creating the Global COVID Certificate Network in order to facilitate trust building and interoperability for safe borders reopening, since it still seems that there are many challenges and barriers to overcome, for example the need for a European eID agreement. The Science and Technology Options Assessment (STOA) Panel of the European Parliament (EP) is looking into the challenges that the pandemic has introduced, and also we explore potential technological solutions and their impact based on scientific data, credible sources of information and the respect of the European values. I look forward to the next steps of the LFPH that could provide us with more ideas and insights on strategies that enhance the use of a certificate in a safe way, and also to provide further technical options for the EU that could be adopted and could help and enable our system to work in a harmonised way. As soon as we achieve that, then we could immediately share the methodology to connect with the rest of the world and move to the new normal of our post COVID digital era, always in respect of the European charter for human rights and the regulation for privacy and personal data.”

GCCN’s trust registry network will enable each country to publish a list of the authorized issuers of COVID certificates in that country that can be digitally verified by authorities in other countries. This will effectively bridge the gap between technical specifications (e.g. W3C Verifiable Credentials or SMART Health Card) and a complete trust architecture required for safe reopening. The use and impact of the network will be far-reaching as the world needs transitive trust more than ever.

“The first wave of apps for proving one’s COVID status did not allow that proof to be shown beyond a single state or nation, did not avoid vendor lock-in, and did not distinguish between rich health data and simple passes. The Blueprint gives this industry a way to solve those issues while meeting a high bar for privacy and integrity, and GCCN turns those plans into action” said Brian Behlendorf, General Manager for Blockchain, Healthcare and Identity at the Linux Foundation.

GCCN will support Global COVID Certificates (GCC) that apply to three use cases: vaccination, recovery from infection, and test results. These certificates can be held and shared in both paper and digital formats. Participating governments and industry alliances will specify the type(s) and format(s) of COVID certificates they issue and accept, allowing for flexibility but also harmonization. The GCC schema definitions and minimal datasets will follow the recommendations of the Blueprint, as well as GCCN’s technical and governance documents, implementation guide, and open source reference implementations, which will be developed in collaboration with supporting organizations and the broader LFPH community.

The GCCN community will offer peer-based implementation and governance guidance to governments and industries as they start to implement COVID certificate systems. This includes how to build a country/jurisdiction-level trust registry and other related infrastructure, and how to leverage GCC to incorporate existing ecosystems into a national or jurisdiction-level infrastructure.

LFPH and the supporting organizations have been pioneering the responsible, effective use of technology to address the global response to COVID since the earliest days of the pandemic. If your organization is actively working in this domain and wants to participate in the GCCN, please reach out to info@lfph.io.

More information about GCCN and a complete list of supporting organizations is available on the LFPH blog.

    Additional Quotes

“Uniting human trust and trustworthy data, Trust Registry Networks are critical first building blocks for establishing trust ecosystems. My team and I created the TrustCache open source project at ThoughtWorks to enable speedy, planetary-scale, and decentralized online/offline authorization checks across and within independent trust ecosystems. ThoughtWorks has a long history working with the travel and transport industries and open source. “LACChain, the Global Alliance for the Development of the blockchain ecosystem for Latin America and the Caribbean, has been working on the development of open-source tools for digital certificates and wallets based on international standards since 2019. The regional LACChain Network already in use by governments, multilaterals, corporations, banks, universities, start-ups, and others in Latin America and the Caribbean is ready to serve as a trust registry for the verification of COVID certificates in a privacy-preserving way. We have always been fully committed to enabling interoperability and compatibility between solutions and networks, and we are very excited to pursue such goals in this Global COVID Certificate Network.”
Alejandro Pardo, Founder & Leader of the LACChain Global Alliance

“Indicio’s success using Cardea, now a Linux Foundation Public Health project, to manage COVID testing for travelers was built on simplicity, clarity, and the predictability everyone needed to trust the technology behind verifiable health credentials. Decentralized identity offers governments and the public a more secure, privacy-preserving path to managing health and travel-data sharing. Verifiable digital credentials can tame the complexity of a vast range of data needs and requirements and manage their sharing and verification in an agile way. We see the Global COVID Certificate Network’s global trust registry as providing the simplicity, clarity, and predictability to make this happen on a global scale.”
    Heather Dahl, CEO, Indicio.tech

“Evernym contributed extensively to the drafting of the Good Health Pass Interoperability Blueprint because our customers, such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and its Travel Pass initiative, need digital credentials that are interoperable and verifiable everywhere, just like a credit card or a passport works today. One of the most important recommendations in the Blueprint was for the establishment of a decentralized global trust registry network based on the open standards we have been advocating at the ToIP Foundation. We are excited that LFPH has stepped up to this task to work with governing authorities all over the world to operationalize the Global COVID Certificate Network. We look forward to helping implement the GCCN, integrating it with Evernym’s Verity and Connect.Me products, and helping our customers leverage this new tool for trust.”
Drummond Reed, Chief Trust Officer, Evernym

“We are humbled to help coordinate global decentralized trust networks and support the Global COVID Certificate Network. Proof Market introduced legislation in California (AB 2004) unanimously passing the Privacy Committee and the House, and passing the Senate — authorizing verifiable credentials for COVID-19 test results. The MedCreds platform, developed by Proof Market, and contributed to Linux Foundation Public Health, has been used to keep the film industry in California open during the COVID-19 pandemic, and aims to be available in Open Source as a reference implementation aligned with the Good Health Pass Interoperability Blueprint.”
    Tony Rose, CEO, Proof Market

“As Blockchain Labs works closely with governments and international communities to support and lead safe reopening of society globally, it is clear that initiatives such as the Global COVID Certificate Network is important to ensure coordinated response from different entities. Together with the Linux Foundation, we will continue to work on enhancing the interoperability of Pass Infra with many adopted vaccination verification solutions, and assist everyone to recover from the pandemic safely.”
Bryan Jin, Director of Global Operations, Blockchain Labs

“AOKpass is committed to supporting important initiatives such as the Global COVID Certificate Network, which are critical to any truly global and coordinated response to the challenges created by the pandemic. We will continue to work closely with collaborative ecosystems like the Linux Foundation to ensure governments, enterprises and communities are equipped to more safely and efficiently engage in vital recovery efforts.”
    Darren Toh, CEO, AOKpass

“As countries look to reopen borders safely, different digital health credentials standards are being developed to verify the authenticity of COVID-19 tests and vaccination reports, making it challenging for airlines and immigration authorities to interoperate with one another. As a solution, Affinidi has been working closely with a growing list of partners to leverage our universal verification solution, “Unifier”, which can verify multiple digital standards. We are committed to working with the Global COVID Certificate Network and all stakeholders to realise an open and secure global ecosystem that supports safe travel, one scan at a time.”
Gina Chiang, Affinidi’s GM, Safe Travel initiatives

  • Snyk Builds Security into AWS CodePipeline to Mitigate Open Source Risk for Developer and Security Teams

Latest integration inside the AWS CodePipeline console builds upon continued collaboration to deliver Snyk products within the AWS DevOps segment, AWS Marketplace, and AWS GovCloud

Boston, MA, June 8, 2021 — Snyk today announced it has built an integration inside the AWS CodePipeline console. This new integration allows AWS CodePipeline users to build automated security controls into their deployment pipeline without having to leave the Amazon Web Services (AWS) console, bringing the Snyk experience directly to AWS users, and empowering them to more efficiently find and fix vulnerabilities in open source code when building cloud native applications on AWS.

As security becomes an increasingly crucial priority for development teams, Snyk has worked closely with AWS to automate security tooling onto AWS’s continuous delivery services, accelerating triaging and empowering agility in development when making application and infrastructure updates.

Snyk’s integration inside the AWS CodePipeline console is the latest in a number of key integrations with AWS services, helping customers build security into applications at each level of the technology stack using an intuitive, developer-friendly security platform. Snyk allows DevOps and engineering teams to accelerate security testing by first detecting vulnerabilities in the developer IDE. Using Snyk’s feature-rich CLI, developers can also secure various elements of their workflow such as AWS CodeBuild and AWS CodeCommit. AWS users can then leverage Snyk’s integrations with Amazon Elastic Container Registry (Amazon ECR) and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) to scan container images and Kubernetes clusters for vulnerabilities and misconfigurations, even mapping new vulnerabilities to any container images already deployed in a Kubernetes cluster. For serverless workloads, Snyk scans AWS Lambda functions for vulnerabilities and can gate deployments through the CI/CD stage to ensure that only secure workloads are permitted to run in production.

This latest integration inside the AWS CodePipeline console expands upon Snyk’s ongoing collaboration with AWS to ensure that both development and security teams are able to leverage automated tooling to mitigate their open source risk as part of the development process, positively affecting the way they work and interact with one another.

    • Development teams: can easily find, prioritize and fix vulnerabilities in their open source dependencies, delivering secure code faster than their competition without having to adopt gated security audits that disrupt application deployment.
    • Security teams: can enable improvements to the development process that ensure that all applications are continuously scanned for vulnerabilities without requiring the security team to manually meet the break-neck speed of modern application development.

“Snyk and AWS share a common goal: to facilitate a digital transformation for our customers through cloud native services that empower automation and developer engagement,” said Carey Stanton, VP of Business Development, Snyk. “Automation in deployment pipelines is key to adopting a comprehensive approach to security throughout the application development lifecycle. Snyk’s tight interoperability with AWS CodePipeline now makes it even simpler for developers to focus on building applications securely, taking advantage of developer-friendly outputs without having to manage a new set of tools.”

“AWS wants to empower our customers to focus their time and resources on innovating their business, which is why we collaborate with security leaders like Snyk to help automate manual security tasks in development,” said Ken Exner, Director, Developer Tools, AWS. “We’re delighted to be working with Snyk to allow our customers to be more agile when delivering secure applications to market.”

“As a hyper growth business, we need a security partner that can dynamically adapt to our needs and allow us to scale our security posture fast,” said Chaim Mazal, VP of Global Information Security, ActiveCampaign. “With Snyk’s developer first ethos and comprehensive Cloud Native Application Security platform, we’re continuously increasing visibility, mitigating risk, all while positioning our organization to achieve ambitious goals for developer productivity and innovation through our secure software development lifecycle.”

As an AWS Partner within the AWS Partner Network (APN), Snyk has been technically validated to work seamlessly with several AWS services, and has achieved AWS DevOps Competency as well as the AWS Lambda Ready and Amazon Linux 2 Ready designations.

Snyk has also recently announced the availability of Snyk Cloud Native Appliance (Snyk CNA), a self-hosted, dedicated instance of Snyk that can be deployed directly onto a customer’s private AWS environment, or even onto an AWS GovCloud environment, operating workloads up to Impact Level (IL) 5.

  • Positive Technologies Identifies Vulnerabilities in WAGO Industrial Controller

Attackers can access controller file system, cause a malfunction, and disrupt the technological process

Moscow, Russia, June 7, 2021 – Positive Technologies experts Vyacheslav Moskvin and Sergey Fedonin have revealed two vulnerabilities in the firmware of the WAGO 750-8207 industrial controller, one of critical severity. The 750 series controllers are used for building automation for renewable energy sources at numerous installations: transformer stations and other power distribution facilities, in the petrochemical industry, water supply and other public utilities, shipbuilding, marine and coastal structures, for mechanical engineering, and other fields. The manufacturer has released security updates and recommendations on ways to reduce the risk.

Vulnerability CVE-2021-21001 is in the CODESYS 2.3 runtime component that is part of the WAGO controller firmware. Exploitation of this vulnerability requires authorization and network access to the controller.

“WAGO gave this vulnerability a CVSS 3.0 score of 9.1,” said Vladimir Nazarov, Head of ICS Security, Positive Technologies. “By exploiting this vulnerability, attackers can access the controller file system with read and write rights. Changes in the PLC file system may cause disruption of technological processes and even lead to industrial accidents.”

The second vulnerability, CVE-2021-21000 (CVSS 3.0 score of 5.3), was found in the iocheckd service developed by WAGO. It is designed to check the inputs and outputs of the PLC, as well as to display the PLC configuration. To exploit the vulnerability, no authorization is required—it’s enough to have network access. Exploitation may cause a sudden shutdown of the controller, and in turn interrupt technological processes.

To fix the vulnerability, organizations are advised to follow the recommendations in WAGO’s notice. The exploitation of this error (for example, if an update cannot be installed) can be detected using solutions for continuous information security monitoring and ICS incident management, such as PT Industrial Security Incident Manager.

  • Harris County Increases Safety and Efficiency in Nearly 150 Public Buildings with Honeywell Technology

Next-level integrated security system better serves the county’s needs, reduces false alarms and provides frictionless experience

Atlanta, GA and Houston, TX, June 7, 2021 — Harris County, Texas, the third most populous county in the U.S., is deploying a new, next-generation security system in its buildings that will help make them more efficient and easier to operate. The new Honeywell system replaces multiple, disparate systems by integrating access control, security cameras, alarms and monitoring across the county’s nearly 150 buildings situated over 1,777 square miles in Houston and the surrounding areas.

Texas-based security integrator, ESI Fire and Security Protection, worked with Harris County to identify its needs and implement a streamlined security platform using Honeywell’s Pro-Watch Intelligent Command security management system to network video recorders, video cameras, thermal readers and thermal cameras. The new system provides detailed, real-time information about alarm events, access and safety across the county.

“The security and well-being of the Harris County employees, visitors and residents is always a top priority,” said retired Maj. Gen. Rick Noriega, interim executive director, Harris County Universal Services. “This project allowed us to improve our systems and gain better insights into the county’s buildings to provide a safer environment. The solutions provided by Honeywell and ESI also better set the county up for the future – we can test and actively add technologies to address new needs with this flexible but scalable system.”

Before Honeywell’s Pro-Watch Intelligent Command system, each county building used different security products that didn’t talk to one another, creating an overly complicated network and increased work for employees.

Immediate benefits for the county include:

    • Saving taxpayer dollars through better analytics that reduce false alarms and help first responders.
    • Monitoring from a single central control station for improved situational awareness.
    • Creating healthier building environments by leveraging people-counting technologies and analytics to manage health and safety compliance, such as social distancing.
    • Streamlining systems to create operational efficiencies and save the county resources that can be redirected to other critical infrastructure or services.

Harris County Universal Services is looking into deploying next-level biometrics solutions from IDEMIA to enhance access control at the courthouse. Using facial recognition, a camera mounted on the entrance turnstiles will recognize employees and frequent visitors, such as judges and lawyers, using data stored in the ProWatch system without the need to physically scan a badge or remove facial coverings. This frictionless access system will allow employees and visitors to enter the building in an efficient and secure manner.

This system can also alert a precinct when a public park is reaching capacity and monitor building occupancy levels to comply with local health regulations. Harris County is actively testing and implementing new features that will add additional capabilities countywide. The upgrades are designed to proactively manage situations and respond faster when required.

“Harris County lacked a holistic, real-time view into its various facilities with its previous systems,” said James Humbert, business development manager, ESI. “We’ve partnered with the county and Honeywell to create positive change in just about every way the county operates by improving intelligence and transparency, reducing response times and helping to save taxpayers’ dollars. We look forward to continuing to work with Harris County and Honeywell in creating an efficient and safe environment for residents and employees that is ready for the future.”

“Through a collaborative effort with the county and ESI teams, we created a more efficient and safer environment for people who work and visit Harris County public buildings,” said Rick Koscinski, general manager, North America, Honeywell Commercial Security. “With a county as large as Harris County, it was no surprise that they had multiple, disconnected systems put in place over the years which limited efficiency and connectedness. Now the county has a fully customized solution that is built to evolve with its needs that will not only help increase safety and awareness but also create an improved building experience for its employees and building visitors.”

With a population of nearly five million people, Harris County employs more than 15,000 workers to support its residents with services including public safety, jails, law enforcement, courts, library services and licensing facilities.

  • Axway Survey Finds Consumers Frequently Have Concerns About the Privacy & Security of Their Data

Companies have an opportunity to build seamless digital experiences from a foundation of trust.

Phoenix, AZ June 3, 2021 – Global API Management leader Axway (Euronext: AXW.PA) is releasing a consumer survey showing a majority of Americans say they would like greater transparency in how companies handle and track their data. The 2021 data privacy study asked 1,017 American adults about their general understanding and concerns related to how companies use, handle, and track their data. Respondents have broad concerns over how their data is stored and secured, and people are overwhelmingly supportive of having more control over who sees their personal data.

The study found 82% wish they knew what specific data companies have collected about them. 82% also have concerns that their online data may not be secure, and only 39% of Americans said they know where their online data is stored. At the same time, 59% of people agreed it’s worth giving companies access to their personal data if it results in a better user experience.

The study also found that three quarters of Americans (75%) choose to work with businesses that are offering a more secure plan to protect personal data, but for 36% of that group, it still depends on how much they trust that company. Just one third trust “Big Tech” more with their data compared to smaller, independent or local companies, while 49% trust the large and smaller companies about the same.

“Whether in energy, health, finance, or retail, companies are trying to stand out and provide brilliant digital experiences while also complying to industry data privacy and security requirements, which is no simple proposition,” said Axway VP and Chief Catalyst Brian Pagano.

“Eliminating friction in customer experiences is the biggest competitive advantage, and these survey results point to security breaches and privacy concerns as a snag in the fabric of the seamless experience people have come to expect.”

The survey also sought to understand consumer attitudes around Apple’s App Tracking Transparency framework, and found people were overwhelmingly supportive of the move. Three-quarters of Americans believe other operating systems should follow suit and block advertisers from tracking your activity and preferences across different applications if the advertisers do not get the user’s permission to do so.

“Experience tells us consumers will go wherever the least amount of friction is, regardless of the custody chain of your data,” said Pagano. “If people feel unsure about how their data is being handled, companies have an opportunity to build trust so that their average consumer doesn’t need to concern themselves with these details. Enterprises can rely on a suite of tools, like Axway’s Amplify API Management Platform, which will give them scalability, privacy and security audit trails, and regulatory and compliance frameworks so they can focus on delivering the best and most secure experience.”

  • Docker Expands Trusted Content Offerings for Developers

New collaborations with AWS, Datadog, Mirantis, Red Hat, VMware and other industry leaders expand access to trusted application building blocks to more than eight million registered Docker developers

Palo Alto, CA, May 27, 2021 – Docker, Inc.™, today announced an expansion of the company’s trusted-content offerings for software developers. Among today’s announcements is the launch of the Docker Verified Publisher program, which provides access to Docker differentiated and trusted content that developers can leverage as reliable building blocks for their applications. Datadog, Red Hat and VMware are the latest three publishers to join a program that has seen 100 companies join in the last six months. Adding to trusted content distributed through Docker, the company also announced the upcoming availability of Docker Official Images into public and private registries from Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) and Mirantis. In a separate press release, Docker announced updates and enhancements to the Docker Collaborative Application Development Platform.

“We are thrilled to announce the Docker Verified Publisher program’s availability to even more publishers and the distribution of Docker Official Images to even more developers through even more registries,” said Docker CEO Scott Johnston. “This greatly expands choice for developers to complement Docker Official Images and solidifies the Docker platform and Docker Hub as the de facto standard for trusted, secure container images.”

Secure software supply chains are becoming increasingly important to development teams as they work to lower the risk of exposure to malicious content while they build applications. Using reliable content at every stage ensures applications are secure and minimizes time and money spent on resolving security issues. With Docker, developers no longer need to worry about the source of their images. Instead they can quickly and confidently discover and use images in their applications from known, trusted sources. Docker Verified Publisher offerings include popular developer components such as Bitnami and Spring software from VMWare, RedHat Universal Base Images (UBI), Canonical Ubuntu and more.

Leveraging the success of Docker Official Images and the existing Docker Open Source program, the Docker Verified Publisher program extends to commercial content incorporating trusted solutions for developers that are part of the application delivery pipeline. With the Docker Verified Publisher program, developers can build, share and run applications quickly with confidence — knowing that each component is secure at every stage of the software supply chain.

Millions of developers rely on Docker Hub as their primary source for trusted content, including Docker Official Images and Docker Verified Publisher images. Developers will soon have the flexibility to download these images from their choice of registry including Amazon Elastic Container Registry Public (Amazon ECR Public) and Mirantis Secure Registry. This offers developers the ultimate flexibility to benefit from the trusted content provided by Docker using the registry of their preference.

With over 200 ISVs using Docker Hub to distribute their software to developers, users who see the Docker “Verified Publisher” badge know that the images they are pulling come straight from, and are supported by, the publisher. With 13 billion image pulls per month from nearly 8 million repositories by more than 13 million developers, Docker Hub is the industry’s leading public container registry. Docker Hub delivers developers the largest breadth and depth of container images and plays a central role in building and sharing cloud-native applications.

    Trusted Content Powered By Docker

Nick Coult, General Manager, Amazon ECR & Amazon ECR Public, AWS

“Our customers expect the highest levels of availability and performance for their container applications, and a container registry is one of the key elements of performance and availability for many customers adopting containers. With Amazon ECR and Amazon ECR Public, AWS customers can rely on a highly available, high performance container artifact registry that works with their container applications. And soon, AWS customers using the Docker Official Images can take advantage of the high availability and fast downloads of Amazon ECR Public.”

Michael Gerstenhaber, Senior Director of Product Management, Datadog

“More than half of applications run on containerized infrastructure, and Docker Hub is the primary source for container images, according to our published studies. It is critical that we provide a secure and robust source for our images, and we are excited to be recognized as a Docker Verified Publisher. You can find any Datadog image to start securely monitoring the performance of your infrastructure and applications.”

    Adam Parco, CTO, Mirantis

“Developers are increasingly reliant on container images to quickly deploy cloud native applications. We’re excited to have our Mirantis Secure Registry be part of the Docker Verified Publisher. This initiative lowers the risk of exposure to malicious content and gives developers confidence by ensuring applications are secure and minimizing the time and money spent on resolving security issues.”

Mithun Dhar, Vice President and General Manager, Developer Business Unit, Red Hat

“With cloud-native applications being deployed into production across industries, we see development teams increasingly looking for container content that is based on trusted, reliable and verified code. Built from Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Universal Base Images provide the foundation to create the next wave of enterprise-ready cloud-native applications, and we’re pleased to be able to bring UBI to Docker Hub users as part of Docker’s Verified Publisher program.”

Ashok Aletty, Vice President of Engineering, VMware

“VMware is pleased to join the Docker Verified Publisher’s program. This provides developers unrestricted access to our artifacts, and allows them to safely adopt the popular open-source technologies we’ve made available. We are excited that VMware Tanzu customers, in particular, will benefit from a wider range of complementary services they can leverage as they quickly get apps to market.”
